Gokyo Trek
Demanding trek in the Everest region
The Gokyo Trek via Everest Base Camp is one of the most interesting treks in the Everest region which covers most of the attractions. It is quite a demanding trek and physically you need to be in a good shape. The Gokyo Trek via Everest Base Camp starts after 25 minutes of flight from Kathmandu to Lukla from where your hiking adventure begins. During this trip you can walk on different sides of the valleys and enjoy a panoramic view of the Himalayas and the sunrise both from a popular viewpoint Kalapattar (5550 m) and from Gokyo Ri (5360). The stunning view of the mountains, beautiful landscapes, monasteries, glaciers and amazing scenery make you feel the trek is worth doing. You will feel satisfied!
Start to Everest Base Camp
We start trekking at 5360m!
First, the trail will lead you to the Everest Base Camp (5360 m) and then to Kalapattar (5550 m). After reaching these two popular must-see destinations, you will be taking the right side trail from Lobuche Base Camp towards Chola Pass (5368 m) and Gokyo Valley. Chola Pass can be a little bit more challenging part of this trip and trekkers are recommended to have crampons (available for rent). If the weather is bad sometimes we need to change the plan and take an alternative route via Phorste village to get to Gokyo Lake. From Gokyo the next morning we will be heading towards Gokyo Ri (5360 m) from where you can be sure to see a stunning view of the mountains and beautiful landscapes in a clear weather.

A trekking plan
TREK ROUTE PLAN
Arrival in Kathmandu
(1350 m), pick up from the airport and transfer to hotel, welcome dinner and trip briefing in the evening (D)
The trip to Gokyo Trek via Everest Base Camp begins after your landing in Kathmandu airport. As soon as you finish the immigration formalities of Nepal Visa and claimed the luggage then you have to take the exit from arrival hall where our representative is waiting to welcome you, holding the Nepal Excursion Treks airport display board to make your easier to identify who is the right one there to pick you up from the airport. Once you are greeted by our airport representative then we will drive to hotel, depending on the landing of your flight and trip plan we go further as mentioned. In the evening we will meet for welcome dinner organized in a typical Nepali cultural house.
Fly to Lukla
(2840 m, 25 minutes) and trek to Phakding (2610 m, 3-4 hrs) (B, L, D)
We will take the pack breakfast and drive early morning to the domestic airport. As the light to Lukla and back the best are morning flights because usually the clouds are appearing and sometime can be windy in afternoon. About half an hour scenic flight will takes us to Lukla which is one of the nice Sherpa town surrounded by high hills. We may take some time for tea/coffee or breakfast after we landed in Lukla. Today we have one of the short day in trek and our walk us more gradual up and downs through the small villages like Cheplung, Thadokoshi, Ghat. Along the way we will be also passing few monastery, mane wall and chortens which are the Buddhist religious monuments. Once we finished the day to Phakding we can also take a short side trip around Phakding village.
Trek to Namche Bazar
(3440 m, 6-7 hrs) (B, L, D)
We will take our breakfast about 7:00 am in the morning and prepare for the day to Namche Bazar which is quite demanding and the beautiful day with the first view of the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest from the trek. First part of the trail continues gradual ascending and descending on side of Dudh Koshi River and the second part closer to Hillary Bridge to all the way till Namche Bazar is mostly steep ascending. We have to stop in Jorsalle at National Park office to take the trekking permit and after the permit is being taken than we will stop for lunch, Jorsalle is the last village before Namche Bazar and from Jorsalle it is about 3-4 hrs of walk to Namche Bazar. We have to make sure before we leave from Jorsalle that we have enough drinking water and some snacks along the way till we reach to our final destination of the day. Namche Bazar is one of the biggest and much commercialized Sherpa town on our trip. Probably you can find everything in Namche Bazar however the prices standard are very similar or even higher than European standard markets. The impressive view of Mt.Thamserku and Mt. Kongde will make your stay in Namche Bazar even more exciting. We can take a side walk to National Park View point at Namche Bazar if the weather is enough good to see the sunset over Mt. Everest and Himalays
Acclimatization day
at Namche Bazar, excursion to Everest View Point, visit to the Khumjung village, monasteries, Everest National Park museum (B, L, D)
Today we will start our excursion visiting the First View Point of Namche Bazar from where we can see the panoramic view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhoste, Lhoste Shar, Amam Dablam, Thamserku, Tabuche Peak, Kongde and its range. We will spend some time for picture and take a short visit to National Park museum to know more about the flora fauna and mountaineers and then we will take steep ascending trail heading towards Khumjung Village. We will enjoy these view from even higher once we reached to Everest View Hotel. Khumjung is typical Sherpa village and the home land of many Everest summiteers. We will visit the monastery of Khumjung and then descend down to Namche Bazar. There is a Sherpa Cultural museum and Sonam Photo Galley and we can visit these places too while our descending way. The main purpose of our acclimatization walk is to prepare our body for adjusting with the high altitude. It’s a nice excursion day in Namche Bazar filled with many cultural and nature attractions.
Trek to Tengboche
(3865 m, 5-6 hrs) (B, L, D)
Our trail today till Kanjuma village is gradual ascending with short part steep. As higher as we go mountains are closer and closer and the views are just breathtaking. We may take a short break in Kanjuma and enjoy the view of Everest, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. Just few meters ahead from Kajuma there are two trails one is going towards Gokyo Valley and another on the right side is leading towards Everest Base Camp so we will take the right side trail that is gradual in the beginning and later steep descending till Phungi Thanga where we will stop for lunch. After Phunji Thanga out trail is gradual for about 45 minutes and onward till Tengboche two hours and fifteen minutes are steep ascending through Pine and Rhododendron forest. Tengboche is located in scenic place and has the biggest monastery we can see during our trip. After some time of rest we will visit to Tengboche Monastery and take a short side walk on the nearby hill to prepare our body with the gaining altitude. The highest peak of the world, Mt. Everest and other snowcapped peaks are admiring the worth our efforts being there.
Trek to Dingboche
(4410 m, 5-6 hrs) (B, L, D)
Today our day is slightly easier than the followings. On the start we will have about half an hour descending to Debuche and from there another half an hour gradual walk will take us to the Dudh Koshi river bridge, afterward till Pangboche we have steep ascending and from Pangboche to Dingboche we have gradual ascending and descending. Today we will be above the trees line in alpine zone. The scenery are just fascinating and once we reached to Dingboche we will have short excursion around the town. Mt. Ama Dablam is staying just opposite site of Dingboche and the views of Himalayas are closer and closer. We can also see Island Peak (6189 m) popular trekking peak from Dingboche. In a nice weather nice sun set over Lhoste and Lhoste Shar are quite impressive.
Acclimatization day
at Dingboche, excursion to Chukung Valley (4730 m) and back or hike to Nagarjun Danda (5300 m) (B, L, D)
Depending on the physical condition and weather we will decide today either to Nagarjun Danda or Chukung Valley. Both of the places mentioned are really worth of doing it however the trail to Nagarjun Danda is very steep ascending while as the Chukung Valley is more gradual ascending and the views from both places are amazing. Mostly people are going on this day to Chukung Valley as for the acclimatization day excursion from Dingboche. Chukung Valley lies on the lap of Island Peak and it is surrounded by Amphu Laptcha Peak, Ama Dablam, Tabuche Peak, Nuptse, Lhoste, Lhoste Shar and other peaks. There are also few places that you can go from Chukung that is Island Peak Base Camp, Imja Se glacier lake and the another most popular view point Chukung Ri. Its the gateway for people who are going to climb Island Peak and taking the Everest Three Pass Trek
Trek to Lobuche
(4910 m, 5-6 hrs) (B, L, D)
The first part of the trail till the Stupa view point is steep ascending. The walk through alpine valley offer us the closest view of Mt. Tabuche Peak, Mt. Cholastse and Lobuche Peak. After about three hours of walk we will get to Thukla where we will stop for lunch. The trail to Thukla is mostly gradual from stupa view point. The most steep up ascending begins from Thukla for about an hour to the top of Thukla Pass where there are many memorials of mountaineers. Thukla pass has great panoramic view of stunning peaks and landscapes too. The last part of the trail from Thukla Pass to Lobuche is gradual ascending however altitude can make us feel quite demanding. Along to way to Lobuche we can also see the Mt. Pomori mountain that lies closer to Kalapattar. After the day is finished we will take a short walk to Glacier view point and we see the moraine of Khumbu glacier, small ice lakes and again the the panoramic view of stunning peaks.
Trek to Gorakhshep
(5160 m, 3-4 hrs) after lunch side trip to the Everest Base Camp (5360 m, 4-5 hrs) (B, L, D)
We will take early breakfast and start our day to Everest Base Camp. Our trail to Gorakshep is mostly ascending however some short part has descending too. We have to walk over the glaciers most of the time and though there aren’t any long steep ascending or descending altitude can make us feel quite tired which is normal. As soon as we get to Gorakshep we will take lunch and take the side trip to Everest Base Camp which need another 4-5 hrs to go and back. On the way to EBC from Gorakshep, there are not any tea houses so we have to be prepared with drinking water and some snacks. The trail is gradual ascending and descending from Gorakshep to Everest Base Camp. We will see Khumbu Glacier and Mt. Nuptse very close from Base Camp. Everest Base Camp is the place from where all the expedition to Mt. Everest and Lhoste starts so the spring time the Everest Base Camp is mostly covered by expedition tents but in autumn time it remains without tents.
Hike to Kalapattar
(5550 m, 4-5 hrs) and descend to Dzongla (4830 m, 5-6 hrs) (B, L, D)
Kalapattar is the main charm of Everest Base Camp trek and is consider as the most scenic view point of Everest region for all trekkers. About 3-4 hours of steep ascending will takes us to the summit of Kalapattar that offer us magnificent view that cannot be described in words.Mountains are surrounding you from every side while you are on top of Kalapattar and the close view of Mt. Everest can be seen from here too in the entire trip. After spending some time there we than start our day to Dzongla which is mostly descending with nice scenery as well. We will be descending through the same trail we took while ascending and once we are closer to Lobuche Base camp we have to take the right side trail passing on side of glacier stream.
Crossing the Chola Pass
(5368 m) to Dragnag (4700 m, 6-7 hrs) (B, L, D)
Chola Pass is one of the adventure pass of Everest Region. Its quite demanding and we have to be prepared with crampon. We will take early morning breakfast and continue our walk through steep ascending trail till the top of Chola. During our ascending again we have the possibility of great view of mountains and landscapes. From the top the trail is very steep descending till Thangnang. Before Thangnang there aren’t any tea houses so we have to be prepared with enough drinking water and some snacks.
Trek to Gokyo Lake
(4790 m, 3 hrs) after lunch excursion around the lake and glacier (B, L, D)
Today is one of the short and easy day of the trek. Our trail is more gradual from Thangnang to Gokyo however we still have to walk over the glacier. Gokyo Valley is another most popular sites of Khumbu valley. We can see the longest glacier of the world called Ngozumba Glacier that has the coverage of 36 km which looks really impressive as well. After some time of rest we can take the side walk for short excursion or just rest. Gokyo lake is the sacred lake for Hindus and both religion people. The holy lake and the surrounding mountains including the sixth highest peak of the world Mt. Cho Oyu (8188 m)are the highlight of the day.
Hike to Gokyo Ri
(5360 m) and descend to Dole (4110 m, 7-8 hrs) (B, L, D)
Gokyo Ri is the most scenic view point of this trip and the view of Mountains and peaks are just stunning. We can see three mountains above eight thousand meter that is the highest peak of the world Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu the fourth highest peak of the world and Mt. Cho Oyu the sixth highest peak of the world including the massive peaks are seen from Gokyo Ri. Our trail is very steep ascending and altitude makes us quite challenging while heading up to the top of Gokyo Ri view point but once you are there and these views will just make you realize how worthy it is. We spend some time to enjoy the scenery and then we will descend down our day to Dole.
Trek to Monjo
(2800 m, 6-7 hrs) (B, L, D)
All the descending trail till Lukla is the same we took while ascending. First part of the trail till Phorse Thanga is steep descending and onward till Mongla Danda for about an hour steep up ascending. After the Mongla Danda all the trail are steep and gradual descending mostly. Once we are closer the the National Park about 30 minutes steep ascending will finally takes us to our destination Monjo. The descending is much easier than ascending in terms of altitude.
Trek to Lukla
(2840 m, 5-6 hrs) (B, L, D)
We will start our last day of trek after breakfast in Monjo. Today our trail is mostly gradual descending and ascending to Lukla. We continue our day to Lukla which we took on the first day of our trek passing though small villages, suspension bridges. Once we finish our day we will hang around the town. We have to reconfirm our next day flight to Kathmandu from the local airlines office in Lukla which remain opened from 3-5 pm
Fly back to Kathmandu,
free afternoon for rest or shopping (B)
About an hour before the flight time we have to be in airport for the flight to Kathmandu. The short flight is still nice and we can enjoy the mountain and landscapes from flight. After we are in Kathmandu then we will drive to the hotel and the rest of the day is free for rest which you can use for shopping or just relax. You can also visit the garden of dreams in Thamel and is nice place for resting. You may need to visit the laundry service after the few weeks of treks to make your cloths fresh.

Now your sightseeing tour in the Kathmandu will give you difference experience than what you have experienced in trek. Mostly you will see the historical palaces built in 16-17 century that are listed in UNESCO world heritage site. It is an opportunity to see the ancient carving and archaeology facts of Nepal. in the UNESCO world heritage sites- Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square (B)
The interesting and historical both cities Bhaktapur and Patan Durbar Square have ancient palaces built with antique carving and many Hindus temples are staying surrounding. During your sightseeing here you can also see the typical Newari culture. There is a pottery square in Bhaktapur and we can see how the household clay pots are prepared. Patan is more popular for producing antique handcraft products and metal statues. Both cities Bhaktapur and Patan are less crowded city than Kathmandu.
